Obituary for Birl Edward "Eddie" Hannah Jr.

Birl Edward Hannah, Jr. (Eddie), entered into the presence of God on October 22, 2021 following a lengthy, but courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 1, 1954 in Ruleville, MS, he was the son of the late Rev. B.E. Hannah and Emily Guest Hannah. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Gloria Ann Hannah.

Knowing they will be reunited one day, he is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kathryn Dellinger Hannah (Kathy); daughter, Mary Elisabeth Blankenship and husband Kenny; son, William Edward Hannah and wife, Maria; brother, Jimmy Hannah and wife, Ginger; three delightful grandchildren, Jack Douglas Adkins, Harrison William Hannah and Kathryn Ann Hannah (Katie); special relatives, Glenn and Dianne Johnson, Dan and Mary Jo Guest, Sam and Pam Hannah, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.

Eddie had been a resident of Abingdon, VA for the past nine years after living in the Vansant area of Buchanan County for forty years. He graduated from Grundy High School and furthered his education at Southwest Virginia Community College, East Tennessee State University, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Eddie was actively involved in several churches by serving as deacon, Sunday School teacher, youth and music leader, and cooking for his church family. He and Kathy served at Grundy Baptist Church for over 25 years and after retirement, at Cornerstone Church of Johnson City, TN.

During his lifetime, Eddie was employed by the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors, Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce, Rife’s TV, Island Creek Coal Co., Jewel Smokeless, Rapoca Energy, and concluded his career at Southwest Virginia Community College as a grant administrator and professor of religion. Eddie had varied interests and pursuits such as helping start new businesses, running for the Virginia House of Delegates, serving on the Buchanan County Industrial Development Authority, Appalachian Regional Conference, and proudly serving on the Lonesome Pine Soil and Water Conservation Board for 20 years. Eddie spent many years enjoying his hobby farm, traveling, cooking, and spending time on South Holston Lake. He supported the arts and was a mentor to many.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Grundy Baptist Church at a later date.

There will be a Celebration of Life service held for Birl Edward Hannah, Jr. (Eddie) on Saturday, April 23, 2:00 P.M. at the Grundy Baptist Church, Grundy, Virginia. Arlie Boyd and Dr. Mark Estepp will be the guest speakers.
