Obituary for James Roger Gibbs
James Roger Gibbs, age 79, of Hurley, Virginia, passed away on Friday, September 9, 2022, at his home.
James was born on July 2, 1943. He was the son of the late John Riley “JR” Gibbs and Orpha Justus Gibbs of Hurley, Virginia. James graduated from Hurley High School. He then attended and graduated from East Tennessee State University, Johnson City Tennessee, with a degree in education. He played football at ETSU and Marshall University. He taught school and coached at the Hurley High School in the Buchanan County School System. He later joined his father JR and brothers Riley and Earl Gibbs as an owner and operator of several coal mines.
He was of the Presbyterian faith, loved watching sports on television, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Riley Burb and Earl Franklin Gibbs; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services for James Roger Gibbs will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2022, 1:00 P.M. at the Virginia Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy, Virginia, with burial to follow at the Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Virginia, with Curtis Stacy officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, September 14, 2022, at the Virginia Funeral Home, Grundy, Virginia, 6:00 P.M., where a service will begin at 7:00 P.M.
Serving as pallbearers will be family and friends.
