Obituary for Johnnie Leslie Ratliff

Johnnie Leslie Ratliff, age 87 of Little Prater Road, Grundy, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at the Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, Virginia.

Born September 4, 1935, in Matewan, West Virginia, he was the son of the late John Kermit Ratliff and Malley Hoskins Ratliff.

Johnnie was retired from Suncoke Energy, where he was a plant manager for over 40 years.

He lived first in Grundy, Virginia, but later went to Lynchburg, Virginia, to attend a school there, until he was a teenager. Then he returned to Grundy to finish high school at Hurley, Virginia.

He was a member of the Little Prater Church of Christ. He visited Costa Rica on a brief missionary journey with his former wife Betty and several members of the Vansant Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, bird watching, yard work, and taking bus tours. He especially enjoyed the bus tours, where he met many famous people and learned so many interesting things.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Ratliff; several brothers and sisters; one sister-in-law, Ava Blackburn; and one brother-in-law, Jerry Looney.

We wish to thank everyone who assisted and helped Johnnie and the staff of Heritage Hall Nursing Home and Buchanan General Hospital.

In accordance with Johnnie’s wishes, his body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
