Obituary for Kenneth Cox

Kenneth Cox, 87, of Hurley,Virginia went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 22, 2022.

Kenneth was born Jan. 6, 1935, in Baltimore, Md., and grew up in Buchanan County, Va. He was the son of the late Cecil and Lottie Looney Cox.

He proudly served his country for 20 years, retiring from the U.S. Navy with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After departing the Navy, Kenneth spent many years working as a diesel mechanic in the region.

Kenneth was a member of Blackey Baptist Church of Hurley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as brothers Patrick Cox and Charles Cox.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Evelyn Cox; sister Ruby Speer of Chattanooga, Tenn.; brother Jerry Cox of Tullahoma, Tenn.; three children, son Kenny Cox and wife Patty of Mendota, Va.; daughter Karen Bruce and husband Kenny of Mendota, Va.; and daughter Kim Roberts and husband Wendall Roberts Hurley; grandsons Adam Bruce (Tif) of Denver, N.C., and Sam Bruce (Catherine) of Belmont, N.C. and Kelly Sykes of Hurley; granddaughter Danielle Mullins (Eric) of Abingdon. Great grandchildren: Theodore Bruce, Macie Mullins, Waverly Mullins, Evie Bruce, Noah Sykes and Conner Sykes.

Services will be held at Virginia Funeral Home, 3222 Slate Creek Rd., Grundy Va. 24614 on Friday March 25 at
11 a.m. with Eugene Whited and Curtis Crouse officiating. Following the service Kenneth will be interred at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Virginia.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening 6 PM at the Virginia Funeral Home. A service will be held at
7 PM.

Serving as pallbearers will be brothers of the Blackey Baptist Church.

A military graveside service will be conducted at the cemetery by the John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion and VFW Post 7360.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the DAV Disabled American Veterans.

Virginia Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of arrangements.
