Obituary for Monroe Stacy

Monroe Stacy, age 88 of Grundy, Virginia, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2023, at the Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, Virginia, following a short illness.

Born February 12, 1934, in Hurley, Virginia, he was the son of the late George Stacy and Loney Davis Stacy.

Monroe was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County. He was of the Church of Christ Faith and a member of UMWA Local Union 1374. He was a coal miner for over 44 years.

Monroe was proud to be a Christian and coal miner. He loved playing music and hunting ginseng until his health started failing him. He was baptized November 12, 1959, at the Blackey Church of Christ. He served as deacon for 20 of his 25 years at the Blackey Church of Christ, moved his membership to Little Prater Church of Christ, where he served as deacon for 20 years of the 30 plus years at the Little Prater Church of Christ.

He could play about any musical instrument he desired to play and sang at church until he was unable to pick any more due to the arthritis. He lost a special friend at a young age, Earl Davis, due to a mine accident. In his later days, he lost his ginseng friend, Kelly Church to illness, Kelly and Ruby were his singing buddies. They also sang at church and visited nursing homes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 41 years, Pauline Sloan Stacy; one daughter, Kimberley Dawn Stacy; two sisters, Lula Stacy and Lida Stacy; two brothers, Ira Stacy and Frank Ed Stacy; two infant sons, Leo and William Stacy.

Monroe was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Funeral services for Monroe Stacy will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at the Virginia Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, Virginia, with Hobert Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Virginia.

The family will receive friends Thursday, February 2, 2023, 12:00 Noon at the Virginia Funeral Home, Grundy, Virginia, prior to the funeral service at 1:00 P.M.

Serving as pallbearers will be family and friends.

A United Mine Workers of America service will be held Thursday, February 2, 2023, 1:00 P.M. at the Virginia Funeral Home, Grundy, Virginia.
